17 Vehicles help get environment programme rolling provided by government of Finland

The Programme Management Unit under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has brought 17 vehicles for use by provincial and central authorities working for the Environmental Management Support Programme.

Of the total 17 vehicles, seven have been allocated to the central authorities and the rest to provincial departments of Natural Resources and Environment in Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Borikhamxay, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Saravan, Xekong, and Champasack.

The Environmental Management Support Programme is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland with 9,500,000 euros, with co-funding from the Lao government worth 460,000 euros, including in-kind contributions.

The programme runs from October 2010 to September 2014 and is implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Laos. International technical assistance is provided by Grontmij A/S and the Finnish Environment Institute.

The programme is a comprehensive capacity building programme for environmental administration in Laos. With assistance from international and national consultants, it supports the environmental authorities at central and provincial levels in various focus areas.

These include integration of environmental issues into strategic planning processes; environmental certification of large-scale development and infrastructure projects, with a focus on mining and hydropower sectors; integrated environmental planning and management at the provincial level; environmental data management and information dissemination, including development of public databases; and environmental quality monitoring, including sampling and analysis of water quality.
